Here is another of those valiant men who helped to build what we now know as the
Management of the radio frequency spectrum in Canada.
Alphonsus
(Alf) Thomas Lawton was also one of the original operators at the Barrington
Passage Wireless Station. Borned
at Harbour Grace, Newfoundland on 11 March 1893, he
was the son of John Thomas and Ellen (Correy)
Lawton.
He began his wireless training with the Canadian Marconi
Company and he worked at several of their coast stations on the east coast
including at Cape Ray, Newfoundland and at Cape Sable, Nova Scotia in
1910-11.
Alf Lawton joined the RNCVR when the war started and he was
wireless officer aboard the icebreaker H.M.C.S. Earl Grey when she sailed to
Archangel, Russia in the fall of 1914.
He was then sent to the Barrington Passage Wireless
Station in April 1915. Later, he
served on the H.M.C.S. Niobe,
at the Port Nelson Coast Station in Manitoba, and at the Cape Sable and Chebucto Head Direction Finding Stations in Nova
Scotia during the
war.
After the war, Mr. Lawton was Officer in Charge at the Chebucto
Head station until he went to Montreal, Quebec in 1920 to attend college.
On returning to work with the Department of Marine's Radio
Branch, he went to the Radio Test Room in Ottawa with E. David Hayman, where he worked on reducing radio
interference problems. He retired in 1958 after a long career with the
Department of Transport's Radio Branch.
Alphonsus T. Lawton was married
at Port Dalhousie, Ontario in June 1926 to Alma Hamilton Scott. She was the
daughter of George and Henrietta (Considine) Scott
and she was born on 18 July 1894. Alf and Alma Lawton had no children. Alf
Lawton was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed the history of wireless
radio in Canada, especially the early years of the Canadian Marconi Company.
His wife was a graduate of the Toronto Conservatory of Music. Mrs. Alma H.
Lawton died at St. Catharines, Ontario on 12
January 1973. Alphonsus T. Lawton died at St. Catharines, Ontario on 5 March 1984.
Taken in Newfoundland on their honeymoon, Alf and Alma
Lawton were visiting Mr. Lawton's sister, Gertie,
and his brother Louis, founder of the Lawton's Drug Store chain.

Prise à Terre-Neuve pendant leur lune de miel, Alf
et Alma Lawton visitaient Gertie, la soeur de Mons.
Lawton et son frère Louis, fondateur de la chaîne de pharmacies Lawton.
