Radio Identifiers

for the Joint Arctic Weather Stations (JAWS)

(Source: memo 14 May 1957)

On March 1, 1951 the radio beacon frequencies and identifications for the Joint Arctic Weather Stations (JAWS) were changed to conform to the general pattern across Canada where the beacon identification and meteorological call sign of the station were identical. The new frequencies and identifications became:

At a meeting held on July 8, 1954 in Ottawa the following decisions were taken:

Circuits to be Used

  • Resolute-Edmonton would be the primary circuit for all scheduled routine weather reports, other DOT scientific and administrative traffic, personal paid messages to and from Resolute, and all scheduled forecasts from Edmonton;

  • Resolute-Churchill would be the primary circuit for all operational meteorological traffic such as unscheduled forecasts and requests for same, all RCAF administrative and operational traffic, and all aircraft information traffic;

  • Broadcast commitments from Resolute to surface ships and aircraft must be determined by frequencies to be used for broadcast.

(Alternative weather circuit was Norman Wells).
