According to one of his children, Alwyn Robert McGee was very fast with Morse Code. He was a radio operator for rumrunners, then for the B.C. Forest Branch, and then the Royal Canadian Air Force. His mother had taken him out of school early because she needed him to financially support her. Despite only having a Grade 9 education, he eventually became a Squadron Leader in the RCAF, second in command of RCAF Station at St Margaret's, New Brunswick .

Alwyn Robert McGee passed away on October 28, 1997 at the age of 87 in Grand Forks, British Columbia.
