J. Robert (Bob) Ferguson

Bob’s career spanned over 35 years with DOT and DOC. He worked at Camperdown, Nottingham Island, Belle Isle, Hartlen Point, Kelly Lake, Montague and eventually served as Area Manager, PEI District, DOC.

My dad was J.R. "Bob" Ferguson and I would like to forward some information in regards to his career with the DOT and DOC. I read with great interest the article by Ernest G. Holland in the Eastern Arctic 1942-1944 as his time there overlapped with my dad's who was on Nottingham Island from 1941-1943.

My dad died on July 21, 1978 and I am attaching a copy of the letter two of the other operators submitted to the IBEW. (see the obituary section at the bottom of the page) As you can see it has not stood the test of time well so I copied the text. I wrote it exactly as it was written but believe the list of his stations is in error as I know he was on Nottingham Island but I never heard him speak about Resolution. I am also attaching a newspaper article from 1943 when he returned from Nottingham and a picture of him with Bill Bréhaut in the Montague Monitoring Station.  I have some pictures of his time on Nottingham Island and also when he was on Belle Isle in the early 50's which I will work on getting ready to send. It's wonderful to have all of this history preserved. Thanks to all involved.

Texte of the letter to IBEW

Dear Sir and Brother,

On July 21, 1978,  J.R. “Bob” Ferguson passed away in Halifax after a courageous battle against Hodgkin’s disease. Bob’s career spanned over 35 years with DOT and DOC with monitoring as his favorite specialty in which he was both proficient and innovative.

Old friends know the routes of those days: Camperdown, Nottingham Island, Belle Isle, Hartlen Point, Kelly Lake, Montague and eventually to Area Manager, PEI District.

They will also remember Bob’s ability with CW, training himself to a speed in both reception and transmission which few attain.

Bob continued his dedication with community work in Montague particularly the Area 4 School which
embraces Kings County. Many hours absent from his wife and family were spent in this fashion and the community remains proud of his achievements in this and many other areas.

To Fran and family and his relatives we extend our Sincere sympathy.

Albert J. (Bert) Bryand and W. (Bill) Bréhaut
