Obituary - Avis de décès

Ronald Eric Barrington

1931 - 2024

Ronald Eric Barrington of Ottawa, ON, passed into the presence of his Lord in his 93rd year on January 13, 2024. The family thanks the staff at Peter D. Clark Long Term Care Centre for the compassionate care they provided.

Ron was born on August 1, 1931 to Edwin and Margaret Barrington in Toronto, ON. After graduating from Humberside Collegiate in 1950, he went on to study at University of Toronto, completing a PhD in Ionospheric Physics. While at U of T, he met his cherished wife Muriel (Sutherland) through InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. They married in 1956 and moved to Ottawa soon after.

His career in Space Research at the Communications Research Centre spanned an historic time in Canadian history. Receiving recognition as a Canadian Space Pioneer for his work on the Alouette 1 satellite, he also represented Canada for many years at the United Nations Committee on Space Research (COSPAR), travelling throughout the world for this work.

In his work, fellowship, and family, he lived his faith. As a member of St. Paul's Church, he served as a youth leader, Sunday school teacher and elder. Gifted both intellectually and creatively, he designed and built a second storey on their home in Bells Corners, and a cottage at Bobs Lake, filling both with his well crafted furniture. He was able to fix almost anything, persisting until success.

Ron is predeceased by his parents, siblings, Murray and Elsie, and an infant daughter Carolyn. He is survived by his wife, Muriel; his three children, Nancy Breakey (Sam), Peter (Deborah) and John (Liz); his eight grandchildren, Kathleen (Dale), Carolynn (Clinton), David (Stef), Andrew (Kristen), Charlotte (Sam), Edward (Alice), Jeffrey and Emma and six great-grandchildren, Norah, Lydia, Eoin, Ezekiel, Ezra and Jude.

The memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Church, 971 Woodroffe Ave on Saturday, January 27th at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Ontario Pioneer Camp (pioneercampontario.ca) where Ron learned so many life skills. A LiveStream will be available on YouTube by searching St. Paul's Ottawa.
